ZIRCON OR CUBIC ZIRCONIA?
Many of you may know a popular and cheap alternative to diamond by the name of zircon…actually this is a mistake; its exact name is cubic zirconia.
It is a laboratory product, synthesized in the 60s and immediately marketed as an economic diamond substitute. In fact, their appearance is very similar even if they have very different physical properties due to which, to an expert eye, it is possible to distinguish them.
On the other hand, zircon is a very different thing which is a semi-precious natural stone composed of zirconium silicate and which is extracted in Cambodia, Nigeria, Sri Lanka and Tanzania
Already known in antiquity as a precious stone, it was found in the oldest archaeological sites in the world and mentioned in many texts including the Bible.
The name of this charming mineral derives from the Arabic “zarkun” red, or from the Persian “zargun” yellow which are in fact its most common colors even if, just like diamonds, it can be colorless or have colored shades: brown-gold green, pink, purple, white, yellow and blue which is the rarest color.
Little known by the general public and often sadly confused with cubic zirconia, this mineral shares many physical characteristics with diamond; one of all the dispersion; that is, the separation of the light that passes through the gems into the different spectral colors.
Exactly this exceptional brightness and reflective quality makes it an optically surprising gem and therefore worthy of being used in high jewelery creations
